The research behind metacognition

Flavell (1979) defined metacognition as "thinking about thinking". Zimmerman's research on self-regulated learning shows that pupils who reflect on their strategies perform significantly better academically.

Metacognition is one of the strongest predictors of academic success — stronger than IQ alone.

The DfE's aims for learning competence are directly supported by metacognitive training.
